Southwest Harbor police report road closures due to death investigation

A female was found dead in a ditch near 61 Main Street on Sunday morning, according to a Maine State Police release. Officials are asking the public for assistance.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine — Update:

On Sunday morning, an unnamed female was found dead in a ditch in Southwest Harbor near 61 Main Street. A passerby saw the body and called police around 11:30 a.m., according to a press release from the Maine State Police.

The release states the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta will perform an autopsy on the body Monday morning.

As of Sunday evening, Main Street is closed as police continue their investigations. Officials said traffic will be detoured around Southwest Harbor.

Maine State Police is asking anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area of 61 Main Street between Saturday night and Sunday morning to call the agency at 207-973-3700.

The Southwest Harbor Police Department responded to a scene on Carroll's Hill Road Sunday. 

According to a Facebook post, the incident is causing "lengthy" road closures, and police are asking drivers to avoid the area. Traffic will be closed from Seal Cove Road to the intersection of Pretty Marsh Road and Route 102 in Somesville.

Traffic is being re-routed from Smuggler's Den Campground and Hall Quarry Road. According to the post, drivers are also being re-routed from Pretty Marsh Road and Fernald Point Road.
