AUBURN, Maine — Two men sustained serious injuries in a head-on crash on Route 4 in Auburn on Monday.
The section of Route 4 where the crash happened is also Turner Road. It happened shortly before 10:30 a.m. between East Waterman Road and the Auburn-Turner town line, Auburn police said in a press release.
Police said an initial investigation indicates a pickup truck traveling northbound hydroplaned and crossed the center line into the path of oncoming traffic, according to the release. The pickup truck collided with an SUV traveling southbound.
The driver of the SUV, James Halliday, 78, of Auburn, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center before being transferred to Maine Medical Center. Halliday was in critical condition as of Monday afternoon, according to police.
The driver of the pickup truck, Albert Deschaine, 36, of Peru, Maine, was thrown from the truck upon impact. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening, police said.
Route 4 was closed for several hours Monday while police reconstructed the crash.
"While speed and road conditions do appear to be contributing factors in this crash, this remains an ongoing investigation," police said. "No charges have been filed at this time."
Auburn police are being assisted by the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office.
