PERU, Maine — A man from Buckfield died Thursday after crashing a dump truck in the town of Peru.
It happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Route 108, in the area of Greenwoods Road and Auburn Road, Chief Deputy James Urquhart of the Oxford County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
Upon arrival at the scene, deputies found a 2012 Mack dump truck on its side. Inside the truck was the driver, Michael Averill, 40, who died at the scene from his injuries, the release stated.
Investigators determined Averill was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Urquhart said. The truck was loaded with gravel, as Averill was working for Everett Excavation out of West Paris when the crash happened, according to the release.
No other people or vehicles were involved in the crash, Urquhart said.
Traffic was rerouted via Route 2 and Canton Point Road in Dixfield while Route 108 was closed, according to the Mexico Fire Department. Route 108 has since reopened.
Mexico police and the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit assisted the sheriff's office at the scene.
