State police investigating fatal Readfield crash involving pedestrian, pickup truck

The pedestrian who died was a 76-year-old man who apparently tripped while crossing the street, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

READFIELD, Maine — A 76-year-old man from Readfield died Tuesday after he apparently tripped and fell into the path of an oncoming pickup truck while crossing the street.

Maine State Police are investigating the crash, which happened shortly before 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 769 Main Street in Readfield, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Wednesday in a press release.

Moss said an initial investigation indicates Andrews Tolman was walking across Main Street after leaving the Readfield Historical Society when he tripped and fell in the eastbound lane.

A 2021 Ram 5500 pickup truck was traveling in the eastbound lane at the time and did not see Tolman lying in the road, resulting in Tolman being hit and killed, according to Moss.

"Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash," Moss said.

Officials have not publicly identified the driver involved in the crash.

State police were assisted at the scene by the Readfield Fire Department and Winthrop EMS.
