Metro BREEZ bus involved in Freeport crash

Freeport police said there were no injuries reported.

FREEPORT, Maine — Shortly before 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, a full-sized Metro BREEZ bus was involved in a crash in Freeport.

According to Freeport police, the bus driver reportedly drove off the roadway which caused damage to the bus.

The crash happened on Route 1 near the intersection of South Freeport Road, police said in a news release.

"There were no injuries reported to the 7 passengers or driver but it took road crews from Freeport Public Works and several large wreckers two hours to clear the scene of debris and pull the bus from the soft shoulder," the release stated.

Passengers, witnesses, and the bus driver say a vehicle was traveling in the same direction just in front of the bus and was preparing to turn onto South Freeport Road from the southbound lane.

The bus driver, however, realized the car was turning too late and swerved to avoid a collision. As a result, the bus driver drove into the soft shoulder and became stuck, police said.

No charges are pending at this time.

The scene reopened to regular traffic flow shortly after 9:30 a.m.
