STANDISH, Maine — A Massachusetts man died Monday morning in a single-vehicle crash after suffering a suspected medical event, exiting the roadway, and striking several trees in Standish.
Shortly after 6:30 a.m., Standish fire and EMS crews, as well as Cumberland County sheriff's deputies, responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash in the area of 476 Chadbourne Rd., the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
Upon arriving at the scene, officials discovered a 2014 Nissan Altima had gone off the roadway and struck several trees, according to the release. First responders began CPR on the driver of the vehicle, who was identified as 80-year-old John Behnke, of Beverly, Massachusetts.
Emergency personnel continued life-saving measures while Behnke was removed from the vehicle, the release said, but he was then pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff's office said an initial investigation showed Behnke had suffered a medical event before driving off the road. There was minor damage to the vehicle, and Behnke's death is not believed to be a result of the crash.
Officials said Chadbourne Road was reduced to one lane for about two hours while the scene was processed for investigation.
