WELLS, Maine — One person died and several others suffered injuries following a crash Friday morning on Interstate 95 in Wells.
Maine State Police responded to a call about a crash involving multiple vehicles around 8:40 a.m. near mile 20 in the southbound lane of the Maine Turnpike, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Friday afternoon in a news release.
An investigation into the incident suggested that a Toyota Prius driven by 23-year-old Oguzhan Cildir of Brighton, Massachusetts, struck a white Toyota Sienna minivan and a white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, which likely caused the truck to roll over several times, Moss said.
Cildir was taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening.
Gloria Cascio, 53, of Albion was driving the pickup truck and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
A passenger in the truck, 60-year-old Vincent Cascio of Albion, was seriously injured in the crash and was brought by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to the release.
Troy Perrault, 51, of Old Orchard Beach, was driving the minivan and suffered minor injuries.
A fourth vehicle was involved after the driver of a gray Chevy Impala was apparently unable to avoid the crash, but no injuries were reported, Moss said.
The Maine Turnpike Authority issued an alert around 8:45 a.m. advising people about a crash in the southbound lane at mile 20 in Wells that blocked several lanes.
Travelers were warned to expect delays and use caution if they were in the area.
Shortly before 10 a.m., the Turnpike Authority said all lanes were blocked, and traffic was being diverted off Exit 25 in Kennebunk.
Maine State Police reported shortly before noon that traffic was still backed up by about 10 miles, and significant delays were expected to continue.
By 12:15 p.m., state traffic officials said one lane had been reopened and that traffic was no longer being diverted at Exit 25.
As of 12:30 p.m., the Maine Turnpike Authority shared that it had lifted all traffic alerts.
Maine State Police shared its "final update" on traffic at 12:45 p.m.: "All lanes have been re-opened, and traffic is no longer being diverted. Still delays, but will clear up soon."
The crash remains under investigation.
Maine State Police were assisted by Kennebunk Fire and Rescue, Wells Fire and Rescue, and the Maine Turnpike Authority.
