AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine State Police reported approximately 20 weather-related crashes in the Augusta area of the Maine Turnpike Monday morning, with at least one under investigation.
"They are being reported as minor, ranging from mile marker 109-133," the agency said in a social media post.
At about 7:27 a.m., state troopers responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash on I-95 near mile marker 113 in Augusta, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.
An initial investigation into the crash revealed 19-year-old Jack Duncan of New Castle was driving a silver 2003 Toyota Tacoma northbound when he went off the road into the median and struck a tree, Moss said.
Duncan was taken to Maine General Hospital with injuries considered life-threatening, and was later taken by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center, the release stated. As of Tuesday, he remains in "critical condition," according to Moss.
"Speed and inclement weather/road conditions at the time are considered factors in the crash," Moss said.
State police ask anyone who may have witnessed this crash to contact Tpr. Keith Barton at 207-624-7076.
As of 7:30 a.m. Monday, both the northbound and southbound sides of the turnpike were down to one lane in the area of mile marker 111 due to a tractor-trailer fire, state police said.
At about 9:37 a.m., state police said the roads were clear.
