OGUNQUIT, Maine — Three people were injured Monday in a crash on the Maine Turnpike in Ogunquit.
It happened shortly before 8:15 a.m. at northbound mile marker 14, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a press release.
Moss said an initial investigation showed the driver of a white commercial van was traveling north when he apparently lost control of the vehicle on wet pavement, causing the van to roll over in the median.
Debris, including roofing nails, construction equipment, and power tools, were thrown from the van into the southbound lanes. A southbound Honda then ran into the debris, disabling the vehicle and causing the airbags to deploy, according to Moss.
The woman driving the Honda sustained minor injuries, officials said.
Three of four male passengers in the van were apparently not wearing seatbelts and suffered serious injuries, though officials said their injuries were not considered life-threatening, the release stated. They were taken to New Hampshire's Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
The driver of the van, 39-year-old Victor Miguel Cedillo Merchan of Brockton, Massachusetts, was not injured, according to the release.
Officials said speed and erratic driving appear to be factors. The crash remains under investigation.
One northbound lane and multiple southbound lanes were temporarily closed for cleanup. All lanes have since reopened.
