State police investigate three-vehicle crash in Auburn

The crash occurred at about 12:30 a.m. Friday on the Maine Turnpike in Auburn.

AUBURN, Maine — Maine State Police are investigating a three-vehicle crash that happened early Friday morning after a car lost control on the Maine Turnpike and was hit by a box truck, which was then hit by a tractor-trailer.

According to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss, state troopers responded to the crash at mile marker 75 northbound in Auburn at about 12:30 a.m. Friday.

"The initial investigation indicates that a passenger vehicle traveling northbound lost control and spun out before coming to rest in the roadway," the release stated. "Subsequently, that vehicle was struck by a box truck and the box truck then struck a tractor-trailer unit.  After striking the tractor-trailer unit the box truck rolled over the guard rail coming to rest partially down an embankment."

The driver of the box truck was the only person who sustained injuries and was transported to Central Maine Medical Center with injuries considered not life-threatening, according to Moss.

State police said speed and wet roads were contributing factors and the crash remains under investigation.

Traffic was reduced to one lane for two and a half hours to remove the box truck and tractor-trailer unit.

The Maine Turnpike Authority, Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and the Auburn Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Copp Motors cleared the box truck and tractor-trailer unit from the scene.
