Tractor-trailer crash on I-395 in Brewer prompts ramp closures

The tractor-trailer driver reportedly failed to negotiate the turn, causing it to roll over into a guardrail and strike a sheriff's deputy cruiser.

BREWER, Maine — A tractor-trailer carrying diesel fuel that overturned on Interstate 395 on the Wilson Street on-ramp in Brewer Tuesday morning is being investigated.

At about 8 a.m. Tuesday, 41-year-old Kristofer Higgins of Baileyville was driving a tractor-trailer on the westbound I-395 on-ramp in Brewer when he reportedly failed to negotiate the turn, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a release.

"His vehicle rolled over taking out the center portion of the guardrail and striking a Penobscot Country Sheriff’s Office cruiser which was traveling eastbound at the time," the release stated.

According to Moss, Sgt. Gary Decker was driving the cruiser at the time of the crash, and he was taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Higgins was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, the release said.

The tractor-trailer was reportedly carrying diesel fuel, which spilled during the crash.

Moss said the Maine Department of Environmental Protection is at the scene cleaning up the spill.

"The westbound on-ramp from Wilson Street and the eastbound off-ramp to Wilson Street are closed and expected to be for several hours while the cleanup continues," the release stated.

The crash was cleared and I-395 was reopened as of 10:22 p.m., Maine State Police said on X, formerly Twitter.

Maine State Police are investigating the crash.
