Officials investigating Gray crash involving car, tractor-trailer

Authorities believe speed and alcohol factored into the crash, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

GRAY, Maine — The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is investigating an overnight crash in Gray involving a car and a tractor-trailer.

It happened shortly before midnight at the intersection of Lewiston Road and Mayall Road, the sheriff's office said in a release Tuesday.

An investigation found that Ryan Carr, 30, of Raymond, was driving a 2013 Subaru Outback on Mayall Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection and entered the path of the tractor-trailer, according to the release.

Carr's vehicle went under the tractor-trailer's rear tires, causing extensive damage to both the Subaru and the rear wheels and axle of the tractor-trailer, officials said.

The tractor-trailer, owned by SPC Transport out of Auburn, was driven by Jacob Harthorne, 30, of Poland. Harthorne was not injured, according to the sheriff's office.

Carr was taken to Maine Medical Center with minor injuries, the release stated.

According to the sheriff's office, they believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

"The Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers to please drive sober and if you do drink, find a safe ride home," the sheriff's office said.

Lewiston Road was closed for about two hours during the crash response.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff's office, pending criminal charges, according to the release.

Gray Fire Rescue and New Gloucester Fire Rescue assisted at the scene.
