STERLING, Massachusetts — Police believe speed and alcohol factored into two crashes in Fairfield on Sunday, the last of which resulted in the death of a Massachusetts man.
Ryan Sargent, 38, of Sterling, died at the scene of the second crash, Fairfield police said in a press release Sunday.
The first crash, a hit-and-run, happened shortly after 10:15 p.m. on Western Avenue, the release stated. The driver of the vehicle that had been struck told police a vehicle had veered into her lane and side-swiped her vehicle before continuing west in the wrong lane, officials said.
While officers were investigating the crash, another crash was reported in the area of 376 Center Road, about two miles from the hit-and-run, according to police. The responding officer identified the vehicle involved in the second crash as the suspected vehicle from the earlier hit-and-run, the release stated.
Police found that Sargent was driving a 2003 Honda Civic and failed to navigate a corner, causing the vehicle to roll over and eject him.
First responder attempted life-saving measures on Sargent but were unsuccessful.
Sargent was alone in the vehicle, and police said they believe speed and alcohol were factors.
There were no other injuries in either crash, according to police.
