Pedestrian, 85, dies in Fairfield crash

Fairfield police said charges related to the crash are not anticipated at this time.

FAIRFIELD, Maine — An 85-year-old man died Thursday after being hit by a vehicle in Fairfield.

The crash happened shortly before 6:15 p.m. on Main Street, in the area of Village Market and Belanger's Drive-In, according to a release from Fairfield police.

Gerald Longstreet, of Fairfield, was taken to Maine General Hospital, where he later died, police said.

The driver, Derek Goodwin, 61, of China, was operating a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek, according to police.

Witnesses told police Longstreet was crossing the roadway outside of the crosswalk at the time of the crash, the release stated. Police also said Longstreet was wearing dark clothing and, due to weather conditions and lighting, Goodwin did not see Longstreet in the road.

Goodwin was not injured, according to police.

"Charges related to the crash are not anticipated at this time, and Goodwin is cooperating fully with the investigation," the release stated.

The Somerset County Sheriff's Office reconstructed the crash. Fairfield-Benton Emergency Services and Delta Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
