Center Street in Auburn reopens after crash prompts closure for several hours

All lanes of traffic on Center Street have reopened as of 9 a.m., according to police.

AUBURN, Maine — A road in Auburn was shut down for nearly 11 hours Tuesday night into Wednesday morning after initial and secondary crashes occurred.

Auburn police and fire officials responded to several reports about a single-vehicle rollover crash shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 930 Center St., the Auburn Police Department said in a news release.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the single-vehicle rollover crash had taken down powerlines and a utility pole, and was blocking all four lanes of traffic.

"A second vehicle was found entangled in the downed lines," the release stated.

The second vehicle, a 2016 Subaru Outback driven by 63-year-old Ronald Theriault of Rumford, was not involved in the initial rollover crash but had become entangled in the downed lines.

The overturned vehicle, a 2000 Ford F-350 utility truck driven by 32-year-old Ryan Buckingham, was determined to be a stolen vehicle, according to police.

Police said Buckingham, who is described as a transient, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with serious non-life threatening injuries. Theriault was not injured.

All four lanes of Center Street remained closed overnight into Wednesday's morning commute to allow crews to clear the scene and make necessary repairs.

"While officers were managing the initial scene, a secondary accident occurred at the intersection of Center Street and Colby Street," the release stated.

Police said 22-year-old Keagan Richardson had struck a parked Auburn Public Works vehicle that was being used to help block off Center Street.

"The public works truck had its emergency strobe lights activated and reflective barricades in place to indicate the road closure," the release said.

According to police, speed was determined to be a factor in the crash and Richardson was charged with driving to endanger. Richardson, his passenger, and the public works employee involved were not injured.

Police added that Buckingham would be charged with Class D driving to endanger, Class C aggravated criminal mischief, and Class E operating without a license.

"Due to the vehicle being stolen from Livermore Falls, charges related to the stolen vehicle are being handled by the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Office," the release stated.

Center Street was reopened to all traffic at about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The investigation remains ongoing.
