Wrong-way driver causes head-on crash in Augusta, police say

A preliminary investigation showed the driver was suspected of driving under the influence, the Maine Department of Public Safety said.

AUGUSTA, Maine — Two people were taken to Maine General Hospital in Augusta after a head-on crash on Interstate 95 on Saturday.

Sarah Lincoln, 45, of Winthrop, entered the interstate the wrong way and struck a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Julia Kronstrand, of Litchfield, according to a release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened shortly after 8:15 p.m., prompting a response from Maine State Police, the release stated.

Kronstrand was taken to the hospital with serious injuries not considered life-threatening, and Lincoln had minor injuries, according to the release.

Officials said a preliminary investigation showed Lincoln was suspected of driving under the influence. The crash remains under investigation.

Augusta police and the Augusta Fire Department assisted Maine State Police at the scene, officials said.
