AUBURN, Maine — The Auburn Police Department is investigating two separate incidents involving pedestrians being hit by vehicles. In both cases, police said the pedestrians were seriously injured.

Around 6:30 a.m. Friday, 55-year-old Cindy Neff of Lewiston was struck by two separate vehicles while crossing Court Street, near the intersection with Pleasant Street, Auburn police said in a release.

Neff was first struck by a Toyota Rav4 driven by Mackendy Thenor, 37, of Lewiston, that was traveling westbound, according to the release. The collision knocked Neff into the second westbound lane, where she was hit again, this time by a 2009 Lexus sedan driven by Annette Dumont, 60, of Green, the release stated.

Neff was taken by the Auburn Fire Department to Central Maine Medical Center and later transferred to Maine Medical Center. As of 2:30 p.m. Friday, she was in critical condition with stable vital signs, police said.

A preliminary investigation, which included witness statements made to police, indicated that Neff ran into traffic and was not utilizing a crosswalk, the release stated. The investigation is ongoing, according to police.

The second crash happened around 8:15 a.m. in the area of 48 Hampshire St., near the intersection with Troy Street, police said.

Mark Sharp, 63, of Auburn was crossing the street in an electric wheelchair in a marked crosswalk when he was hit by Amber Degen, 34, of Auburn, the release stated.

Sharp was taken by the Auburn Fire Department to Central Maine Medical Center with serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening, according to police.

Police issued a citation to Degen for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, the release stated.
