PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- More than a dozen members of the South Portland Fire Department will lace of the skates for a charity event on Saturday, March 18th, at the William Troubh Ice Arena in Portland.
It's called Checking for Charity and will raise funds for many local and national charities. Firefighters say they see a lot of people in need in their line of work and this is their way of giving back.
Saturday's event will feature two hockey games. First, at 4:30 PM, the South Portland Fire Department squad will faceoff against the South Portland High School alumni team. Afterwards, former NHL players will take the ice against the Central Maine Community College hockey team.

Admission for the games is free, but donations will be accepted at the door. You can see more information about the event on the Checking for Charity Facebook page.
