MANCHESTER (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The Maine Amateur Championship begins Tuesday at Belgrade Lakes golf club, and the tournament's most decorated player will try for another title.
Manchester's Mark Plummer is regarded by some national experts as the best golfer from this state. He won the Maine Amateur 13 times between 1973 and 2002 and has won 38 club championships at his home course, Augusta Country Club.
One of the biggest moments of his career came in 1995 when he went head to head with Tiger Woods in the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur. He lost on 18th hole, but gained national recognition and plenty of young fans.
