WINDHAM, Maine — For any outdoor enthusiast or those simply looking to explore Maine's landscape, the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust's 2024 trail challenge is now active.
This is the second year the land trust is putting on a trail challenge; this time it's in Windham.
"We're really excited to highlight what we've done out here," Program Manager Toby Jacobs, said.
The challenge is at East Windham Conservation Area and the Lowell Preserve which are connected through the trail system.
The challenge is finding six landmarks within the area.
"We have three landmarks here at East Windham and then three at Lowell," Jacobs said. "The three landmarks at East Windham here are kind of the three biggest highlights of the preserve. They're also the easiest to find and most accessible. The three in Lowell are a little more off the beaten path."
If six landmarks sound like too much for you, the challenge can be completed by reaching three as well. However, you do not have to complete the challenge in one day. If you wish, you can spread out your adventures.
In addition, there are also plenty of resources to help keep you on the right path while you're out exploring, Jacobs said.
"We have a website dedicated to the trail challenge that describes the landmarks and has maps of both East Windham and Lowell," Jacobs explained. "We have static maps and interactive maps that will also work on your phone and then once you get to the trailhead, there's a map specifically dedicated to the trail challenge."
He said each landmark has a post letting you know you've reached it. Once there, you'll snap a selfie and then use the QR code at each post to email your photos to the land trust.
"There's something here for everybody," Executive Director Will Sedlack, said.
Sedlack said the other day he saw a multigenerational photo of a family from babies in carriers to grandparents, enjoying the trails.
Even though the views are prizes in their own right, you'll get something more tangible for your effort.
"We are excited to again partner with REI to provide prizes for those that complete the challenge," Sedlack said. "There are water bottles available, some great Presumpscot Regional Land Trust hats."
He said a few hundred people have already signed up for the trail challenge and some have already completed it.
The challenge runs through Labor Day weekend.
The land trust is also working on a preserve in Westbrook where they are considering holding next year's trail challenge.
