Maine's largest ski mountains announce 2023 opening dates

Skiers and snowboarders rejoice! The offseason is nearly over.

MAINE, USA — Editor's note: The video above aired Nov. 4, 2023, prior to Sunday River announcing its opening dates.

Many parts of Maine saw their first snowfall last week, and now Maine's two largest ski resorts are set to open to skiers and snowboarders this week.

Sugarloaf announced on Oct. 16 that its opening day would be Friday, Nov. 17.

Sunday River announced in a press release Monday that it would open Nov. 14 for New England Passholders, Ikon Passholders, and people who purchased ticket packs. The resort said daily lift tickets would be accepted beginning Nov. 15.

Sunday River will start the season solely with trails off the Jordan 8 chairlift and will expand its terrain from there as the season goes on. The chairlift, which features heated seats and a weather-protective bubble, debuted last season.

Sunday River and Sugarloaf are owned by Boyne Resorts, which also owns Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton and Loon Mountain Resort in New Hampshire.

Saddleback Mountain, which reopened to skiers in 2020 after nearly five years of dormancy, said it would open Dec. 2 and 3, close for the middle of the following week, and then open full operations on Dec. 8.

Maine is also home to many smaller, locally-owned mountains, most of which have not yet announced their opening dates.
