LEWISTON, Maine — For most of the day Friday, hunting of all kinds was prohibited in four Maine towns for the start of hunting season this weekend: Bowdoin, Lewiston, Lisbon, and Monmouth.
The announcement was made Friday morning by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) as the search for mass shooting suspect Robert Card, 40, of Bowdoin, continued into its third day.
That prohibition has now been lifted, and the search is over. The body of Card was found at about 9:20 p.m. at a Lisbon recycling center, according to The Associated Press.
Rifle hunting season for Maine residents is scheduled to start Saturday, Oct. 28. All other hunting starts Oct. 30.
More than 350 law enforcement officials were involved in the search for Card, who was presumed armed and dangerous, and much of that search was in various sections of woods.
During a press conference Friday, Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck said he had conversations with Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Judy Camuso about how to best approach the situation for hunting season.
“[Hunting is] a big deal in Maine. It may not be a big deal to a lot of people from other communities, but we know what that’s going to look like," Sauschuck said. "[Law enforcement is] in the woods. If you just happen to be in the woods minding your own business going for a walk, that’s going to make us a little concerned, right?"
