Maine woman rescued on New Hampshire hiking trail

Ethel LaFlamme, 58, from Greene, Maine was hiking with her husband when she slipped and fell at Champney Falls.

CONWAY, N.H. — New Hampshire Conservation Officers rescued a woman from Greene, Maine after slipping and falling at Champney Falls.

Ethel LaFlamme, 58, was hiking with her husband on Friday, September 13 when she slipped and fell at Champney Falls injuring her hip, New Hampshire Fish and Game reported on their website.

According to Lt. Bradley Morse, LaFlamme was unable to stand or walk, so her husband hiked back to the trailhead due to a lack of cell phone service. He asked a passerby to call 911 once they got a cell signal, Morse stated.

Officials said the injury happened around 5:15 p.m. and 911 was notified at 6:50 p.m. Rescuers got to LaFlamme at 8:40 p.m. but did not get to the parking area of the Champney Falls Trailhead until 10:35 p.m. where the hiker was then transported to Memorial Hospital in North Conway.

According to Morse, New Hampshire Fish and Game, Conway Fire, and Lakes Region Search and Rescue all teamed together to rescue LaFlamme 1.4 miles up the trail.

New Hampshire Fish and Game reminds hikers to prepare themselves before venturing out into the wilderness, including packing ten essential items: map, compass, warm clothing, extra food and water, headlamp, fire starter, first aid kit, whistle, rain/wind jackets and pants, and a knife.
