PORTLAND, Maine — "Hope this helps!"
A video posted on social media platform TikTok is certainly raising a few laughs among the news team here at NEWS CENTER Maine, and the outpouring of comments helping to "clarify" where exactly in Maine the footage was shot is just one more reason to love the Pine Tree State.
In the video by Friday Beers, a person is streaming a NEWS CENTER Maine newscast that includes a live camera shot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, with all the pomp and circumstance and pyrotechnic displays the Olympic opening ceremony had to offer.
Or was it Portland?
A location stamp or legal ID displayed as an overlay at the top of the screen of the live cam reads: "WCSH | PORTLAND, ME," which leads into the debate.
"That's not Portland, Maine. I've been to Portland, Maine. That's not Portland, Maine," one person in the video says, pointing at the screen.
"It could be Bangor," a second person suggested, pronouncing the Queen City's name with exquisite accuracy.
That's when the comments poured in to help clarify where, exactly, the live shot camera was pointed. Here are some of our favorites. (Note: We're leaving the grammar as it's written.)
"That's Paris Maine," one person wrote. "idk kinda looks like South Paris," another commenter wrote in reply. "You're mistaken, that's Poland." "Could be south china?" "More like Sweden maine."
"So close! That's obviously bath ironworks"
"I believe that is dysart's"
"Sanford so beautiful this time of year"
"This is obviously old orchard beach," which garnered the reply, "literally like i can see the pier"
"That's literally Paul Bunyan"
"That's Portland head light hope this helps." And another: "isn't that the lighthouse in portland???"
"I live in South Portland, that's actually the Time and Temperature building, hope this helps!" This was shared by a few people, but there was one great point made to refute the claim: "Obviously not it doesn't say Call Joe."
"Close, I actually think it's Westbrook," followed by: "Westbrook resident, can confirm."
"Nah bro, that's Bar Harbor"
"omg it's the bangor waterfront !! i wonder who's performing" (minor edits)
"nah that's that one dropper at funtown i swear to god." A few people had this thought: "That's the dragons descent in Saco actually"
"This is the oxford casino"
"They do that when the sea dogs get a home run"
"Lived in maine my whole life, thats actually in south portland, completely made out of lobster shells if you could believe it"
"Guys it's the Sappi paper mill"
"Ohhh that's the reny's"
Nubble Light got a ton of mentions, as well as Lewiston and Waterville.
Well, wherever it was could forever remain a mystery. But if you'd like to catch NBC Olympics coverage or news and events in what we can verify is, indeed Maine, you can catch it all right here on NEWS CENTER Maine.
Friday Beers calls itself the "definitive source for comedy" with popular social media accounts on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, as well as a podcast, merch, live events... the list goes on and on.
Almost Friday Media is the company behind the accounts and was created in 2019 by a group of three brothers, according to an article on Business Wire, which describes it as a "comedy-driven content platform, production company, and lifestyle brand."
