Varsity Club: Carter Libby reflects on four state championship wins and community service

The 2024 Gray-New Gloucester High School grad was one of Maine's top runners and won a state championship in basketball, while working to become an Eagle Scout.

GRAY, Maine — Carter Libby sure had a lot of success on the track at Gray-New Gloucester High School.

Before he graduated this past spring, Libby capped off an impressive career by winning the 1600-meter and 800-meter races at the Class B state championship track-and-field meet.

He also won a state championship in cross-country in the fall of his junior year.

While he became one of the top high school runners in Maine, he used to spend his spring sports season on the diamond and even made the varsity baseball team as a freshman.

“It was a pretty tough decision because I played baseball my whole life, but I knew the track was probably better suited for me," Libby said.

After success in cross-country, Libby knew he had a bright future in running if he worked for it.

His strong work ethic and time-management skills were on display throughout his high school career, both on and off the track.

Libby was in Boy Scouts for most of his life and said he recently completed his Eagle Scout project, achieved all his merit badges, and the distinction of becoming an Eagle Scout is currently being finalized.

On top of all that, he was the president of the National Honor Society, a member of the community service club, and was one of the top students in his class.

Last month, Libby was named as the 2024 Maine Sports Hall of Fame's Scholar-Athlete.

“I think it’s good to have an impact on the community as well, through sports, through service, everything," he said. "I’ve just learned some good life skills through these clubs. It’s just helped me become a better person."

The soon-to-be University of Maine Black Bear said his parents were always there for him whether it was driving him to practices, scout meetings or supporting him through anything he was involved in.

His dad's truck even has"'4x State Champ" painted on a window to highlight all of Libby's athletic accomplishments.

And don't forget: He was on the Gray-New Gloucester basketball team that won the Class A boys basketball state championship this winter, winning the school's first gold ball in 49 years.

What made that win even more special, Libby said, is that he was able to celebrate that success with some of his best friends who he played basketball with since elementary school.

So, yes, he has plenty found memories from high school to reminisce on, but he is also gearing up for his first season of college athletics.

Libby will join the cross-country, indoor, and outdoor track teams at UMaine.

Before he begins his collegiate career in Orono, Libby said he hopes people remember him for his strong work-ethic and dedication to service, rather than his athletic success.

And maybe they'll remember him for that bleached blonde haircut, too.
