(NEWS CENTER) - Former UMaine player Bob Corkum didn't get the Black Bear job he initially wanted as the permanent successor to fired head coach Tim Whitehead. Instead, his next venture will be working with former members of the UMaine hockey team as he was hired by the New York Islanders.
Corkum will bea member ofthe player development department.
He was hired by former Black Bear goalie Garth Snow, who is now the Islanders general manager.Corkum'snew colleagues also includeMaine teammate and Islanders head coach Jack Capuano, as the Black Bears first Hobey Baker winner in 1992, Scott Pellerin, He's the head coach of New York's AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
Corkum was named Maine's interimcoach on April 9th. He was a finalist for the permanent appointment, but ultimately lost the job to Yale associate head coach and a one-time assistant for the Black Bears Red Gendron.
