CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Board of Trustees has officially approved Bill Belichick’s contract as the next head coach of the Tar Heels football program. The decision was finalized during an emergency meeting held on Thursday morning at 9 a.m.
Belichick, a legendary NFL coach known for his tenure with the New England Patriots, reached an agreement with UNC on Wednesday. The contract, which spans five years, marks a significant step for the university’s football program as it looks to bolster its national competitiveness under Belichick’s leadership.
According to The Athletic, Belichick is set to make $10 million per year. Additionally, USA Today college football writer Matt Hayes reported that to land Belichick, UNC agreed to increase its name, image, and likeness (NIL) commitments from $4 million to $20 million to attract players.
The emergency meeting was called to ensure timely approval of the contract and allow Belichick to begin his role without delay. With the Board of Trustees’ unanimous vote, Belichick is set to start preparations for the upcoming season immediately.
