WILTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A man from Wilton was sentenced to 35-years in prison Monday after admitting he killed his grandmother.
Dana Craney entered the guilty plea in Franklin County District Court and was immediately sentenced for the murder of Joanne Goudreau in the home they shared.
Craney admitted to investigators that he and his grandmother got into a fight and he later struck her with a hammer six or seven times as she lay in bed sleeping. During a rambling apology Craney tried to explain what happened that day.
"Just the constant screeching and fighting that we went through was so hurtful to me, because all I ever wanted was to just to be seen as a normal, intelligent person", Craney said.
Craney has a history of mental health issues dating back to when he was 8-years old. Under Maine law those issues did not rise to level of relieving him of criminal responsibility for his actions. The sentence allows him to start a new life when he's released from prison. He'll be in his early to mid-fifties then.
