BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A sinkhole opened up on a walking path along the Bangor Waterfront Wednesday afternoon about 200 feet from the intersection of Railroad + Front Streets.
A street light was tilted on its side, and a small hole was surrounded by yellow tape and orange construction barricades.
Public Works Director Dana Wardwell says underneath the ground is a hole close to 8 feet wide and 20 feet deep.
Wardwell believes the sinkhole formed due to a failed storm water line that drains into the Penobscot River.
He estimates that storm water line was close to 100 years old. Crews will repair the sinkhole Wednesday evening.
As a precaution, the road and parking areas south of Railroad Street between the railroad tracks and the river will be closed and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area.
