ORONO, Maine — Since early April, a team from the University of Maine has been leading a group of exercise classes for seniors at the Orono Commons nursing home.
The researchers are looking at how daily movements such as walking across a room and climbing stairs might impact balance.
Elizabeth Batts is a Resident at Orono Commons and has been taking part in the research. "I have not gone outdoors to walk that much because of the winter. I have been waiting for summertime. So this exercise is really good. I love it."
Early research indications show positive effects.
"Just in their overall mood, from what I can tell that it is better and I think if you are getting more free in your physical body you can't help but get more free in your spirit as well and that's obvious throughout this trial." Said Will Prescott, Student at University of Maine
The researchers plan to wrap up their study on healthy living in our senior years next week.
