FARMINGTON, Maine — The Strong Elementary School principal was arrested and charged with operating under the influence Friday night in Farmington.
Brenda Sue Dwiggins, 61, of Farmington, was arrested on a misdemeanor OUI charge after police pulled her over for a defective headlight, Farmington Deputy Chief Shane Cote confirmed.
Farmington Police Officer Brandon Sholan stopped Dwiggins’ vehicle on Perham Street and became suspicious that she'd been drinking and performed a field sobriety test. That’s when Dwiggins was arrested, Cote said.
Dwiggins was taken to the Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington and later released on $150 bail.
"I have verbally, and in writing, apologized to my community, school board, superintendent and colleagues for this situation. I am working hard to rebuild the trust of my community, school board, superintendent, and colleagues every day," Dwiggins told NEWS CENTER Maine. "This was a split-minute decision in time that has changed my life forever and I will work diligently to repair this breach of trust in my leadership abilities as a principal."
Dwiggins is expected to appear in court on the charge on June 18 in Farmington.
