South China man charged with arson after mobile home fire

The man was taken into protective custody by police after reports that he was verbally and physically abusive to firefighters.

ID=25239077SOUTH CHINA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Thirty-seven-year-old Jason Woods was taken into protective custody and charged with arson after a fire destroyed his mobile home.

The South China Fire Department was called to the fire at 220 Western Ridge Rd. on April 11.

According to our media partners at the Kennebec Journal, the suspect was arrested at the scene after reports he was acting irrationally, including acting verbally and physically abusive to firefighters.

An affidavit by Kenneth MacMaster, a state fire investigator, says the man told a neighbor he had set the fire, saying, "I can't believe I burned the house." That neighbor then saw fire along the side of the home and called 911.

Woods was brought to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta for a mental health evaluation prior to being taken to the Kennebec County Jail on Wednesday.

The man made an initial appearance in Kennebec County Superior Court from via video from jail on Friday.
