SKOWHEGAN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --The cleanup in Skowhegan continues following Wednesday's massive rainstorm.
A shopping plaza parking lot has been turned into shambles. About six inches of rain pelted the Skowhegan area for hours Wednesday.
The relentless storm cut down on the amount of parking available at the Skowhegan Plaza. There is a culvert that runs under the parking lot, and during the storm it filled with debris. Water rapidly poured over the parking lot creating a river of fast moving water.
Once a heavily used parking lot for Family Dollar, Rent-A-Center, and a New Balance factory store, now looks like a place an earthquake hit.
Officials surveyed the ground and said it's safe to go inside the buildings. Code enforcement officer, Randall Gray said people are trying to weather the shock and devastation this rain storm left behind.
"This culvert which is a 60 inch culvert would normally take that type of flow over a longer period, but in that short of period that carried down so much debris from the south to this end," said Gray.
All of the companies in the plaza are open for business.
Skowhegan Fire Department, Captain Jason Frost said you can park behind the buildings and enter through the back entrances.
"Mother nature is crazy, and if she wants to go somewhere she will make it happen," said Capt. Frost.
The private firm that owns the Skowhegan Plaza parking lot is sending an engineer to assess the damage.
