LINCOLN, N.H. — A Massachusetts man has died following a "medical emergency" while hiking with his family Tuesday afternoon in New Hampshire.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department was notified around 2:14 p.m. about a hiker experiencing a medical emergency between the summits of North and South Peaks on the Kinsman Ridge Trail in Franconia, the department said in a news release.

"The Kinsmans are located approximately 4 miles from the nearest trailhead, which makes quick rescue response difficult," the release stated. "Due to the severity of the emergency, the NH Army National Guard was called to see if they could assist in the rescue efforts. In addition to the Blackhawk request, AMC staff were responding with medical equipment from the Lonesome Lake Hut."

Medics reached the 52-year-old hiker just before 4 p.m. They continued performing life-saving measures, which family members and Good Samaritan hikers started until he was taken down to an ambulance from Littleton Rescue and Fire at 4:40 p.m., the department said.

According to the release, the hiker "succumbed to his medical emergency," and his body was transported by Ross Funeral Home in Littleton.

The Topsfield, Massachusetts man was hiking with his family when the emergency happened. The department said the family planned to hike to the top of South Peak and then return to their vehicle by using the Fishin Jimmy and Lonesome Lake Trails.

Officials said the hiker's name would not be released at this time pending family notification.

Conservation officers and volunteers with the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team also responded from the Mount Kingsman trailhead in Easton to assist.
