VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla — A Florida sheriff made good on a Friday promise to publish a photograph and a "perp walk" video of an 11-year-old student accused of making a school shooting threat.
Two students, ages 13 and 14, were arrested in Volusia County Friday, accused of posting school shooting threats online. Later that day, Sheriff Mike Chitwood warned students and parents that his agency will start sharing the pictures of students who are caught issuing such threats. He also said images of the parents will be shown, too.
"For you parents out there, today's hoax cost around $21,000," Chitwood said. "We're coming after you, and starting Monday... we're going to start publishing [your child's] face and doing perp walks with him when we take him into custody. Then we're going to show pictures of you, the parents."
The sheriff made good on half of his promise by Monday afternoon, publishing a photograph and video of an 11-year-old student who was charged with making a threat to a middle school in Port Orange. According to Chitwood, the student had a written list of names and targets, but said it was all a joke.
The sheriff's office recovered a slew of airsoft rifles, pistols, fake ammunition, knives, swords and other weapons the sheriff said the student was showing off to other students in a video.
The video released by the sheriff's office shows the child being lead out of a patrol vehicle in handcuffs and into the police station for booking before being placed into a holding cell.
"P.S. I can and will release the names and photos of juveniles who are committing these felonies, threatening our students, disrupting our schools and consuming law enforcement resources," Chitwood wrote on Facebook.
