BRUNSWICK (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Incumbent Senator Angus King has secured his seat in the U.S. Senate for another six years after beating out Republican candidate Eric Brakey and Democratic candidate Zak Ringelstein in the 2018 midterm elections.
Sen. King has been serving as Maine's junior Senator since 2013 after succeeded retiring Republican Olympia Snowe in Maine's 2012 Senate election.
Recently he voted against embattled Supreme Court nominee Judge Kavanaugh because he said he "didn't think he was the right guy for the job." King has said he supports President Trump's move on trade but worries that it is heavy-handed and may cause more harm than good for Maine.
No stranger to politics, King who has been a political independent since 1993, served two terms as the Governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003.
The father of five and lawyer from Brunswick says when he was 50-years-old there was an open seat for governor and that is when he decided to go for it.
Now at 74-years-old, King says he has more to accomplish in the U.S. Senate like work on the opioid epidemic, protecting Medicare, working with veterans who need services and working to expand rural Maine's economy are just some of the reasons he can't "walk away" just yet.
Critics categorize King's voting record as siding with the Democrats. Despite an attempt to remain in the middle of the aisle, King has said he made a choice to caucus with the Democrats to receive committee assignments.
