Collins, King vote to confirm Maine lawyer as federal judge

Stacey Neumann, an attorney from Portland, was nominated by President Joe Biden to fill a vacant seat on the U.S. District Court in Bangor.

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Both of Maine's U.S. senators voiced strong bipartisan support for Stacey Neumann ahead of a vote to confirm her as a federal judge Monday.

The 50-43 vote comes after a thorough vetting process and nomination by President Joe Biden earlier this year.

Neumann will serve as a U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Maine in Bangor, filling a vacancy left after Judge Jon Levy left his top post for retirement.

Neumann has been with the law firm Murray Plumb & Murray in Portland since 2013. Prior to that, she was a special assistant U.S. attorney and assistant U.S. attorney.

"I found in my discussions with her and in my discussions with those who know her well is that she has the right temperament to hold this position and to give confidence to those who appear before her in the court," Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, said Tuesday on the Senate floor.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, also shared her confidence in Neumann to take on the judgeship for the District of Maine.

"Based on her experience and character, I believe that Stacey Neumann will faithfully uphold our nation's laws and that she will serve the State of Maine and our nation well," Collins said.

According to her biography on the Murray Plumb & Murray website, Neumann graduated from Cornell Law in 2005. It also stated she served on the Board of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Board of Governors of the Maine State Bar Association.
