PORTLAND, Maine — Visiting hour and funeral services have been announced for former Maine Gov. Joseph Brennan.
Brennan, a Portland native, was also a congressman, state attorney general, state senator, lawyer, and commissioner with the Federal Maritime Commission. He died Saturday at the age of 89 at his home on Munjoy Hill.
Visiting hours are Thursday, April 18, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Portland City Hall in the State of Maine Room. A funeral mass is Friday, April 19, at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.
"Brennan was an advocate for working people, and as governor instituted major reforms in education, economic development, and environmental protection in Maine," his obituary reads.
“Maine and the nation have lost a great public servant, and I have lost a friend," Gov. Janet Mills said in a statement. "Through five decades of public service – as a state legislator, County Attorney, Attorney General, Member of Congress, Federal Maritime Commissioner, and as Maine’s 70th Governor — Joe Brennan never stopped working to improve the lives of Maine people. The proud son of Irish immigrants, Gov. Brennan’s career was guided by the core values of hard work, fairness, friendship, and a drive to help those who needed a helping hand, values which he learned growing up on working class Munjoy Hill in Portland."
