PORTLAND, Maine — With just days until voters head to the polls, former President Bill Clinton made a stop at Thompson's Point in Portland to voice support for Vice President Kamala Harris and her running-mate Tim Walz.
Clinton was joined by prominent Maine Democrats, including Gov. Janet Mills, U.S. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, and even former GOP Congressman David Emery.
More than a hundred people turned out Friday afternoon to hear Clinton's case supporting Harris and Walz.
"I don't think it's a close question about who is temperamentally, intellectually, emotionally the best qualified to be president," Clinton said.
Clinton's message focused on the contrasting characteristics and visions of Harris and Republican candidate former President Donald Trump. Emery said he's a proud Republican, but he doesn't want to see another Trump term.
"Donald Trump failed the character test," Emery said. "Donald Trump is unhinged, unstable, and unfit to be president of the United States."
Clinton went on to say there's a reason prominent Republican leaders like former Vice President Dick Cheney won't endorse Trump.
"Everybody who loves this country knows at some point, we all have to live under the same set of rules, and we fight elections under the same set of rules," Clinton said. "Donald Trump doesn't believe that. He believes there should be one set of rules for him and his crowd and another set for everybody else."
While Democrats gathered at Thompson's Point, a Maine GOP state representative said the Republican party has been equally energized. State Representative Katrina Smith said she's taken part in about 20 Trump rallies this election cycle.
"This past week, I've seen the enthusiasm and support for President Trump continue to grow. Mainers are ready to get our country back on the path of peace and prosperity and I believe President Trump is on course to take the entire state," Rep. Smith, R-Palermo, wrote in a statement to NEWS CENTER Maine.
Congresswoman Pingree is calling the election the "scariest election of our lifetimes."
"So like all of you, I'm very nervous," Pingree said. "But I've been telling people that I'm nauseously optimistic."
