SACO, Maine — The mayoral race in Saco is on the brink of making history as voters flock to the polls, ready to cast their ballots in an election that is bound to be a significant turning point.
There is excitement and anticipation as the city prepares to elect its first-ever woman mayor, Jodi MacPhail.
MacPhail is no stranger to local politics. She served two terms as a dedicated member of the Saco City Council and in doing so became the fifth woman to serve as city counselor.
However, her journey has reached a remarkable milestone as she ascends to the role as the first woman to serve as mayor there.
"There's always got to be a first," MacPhail said.
She is running opposed.
“I believe that my running unopposed is a sense of the community and residents having faith in me to lead the city forward," MacPhail said.
The significance of MacPhail's election as Saco's first woman mayor extends far beyond her individual accomplishments.
For the residents of Saco, her victory represents a pivotal moment in the city's history, signaling the growing importance of women in local politics.
We heard from some Saco residents who expressed their enthusiasm for this historic election.
"It's exciting to see more women getting involved in politics," Jeanie Bodnar, a Saco voter, said.
"Making history today with the first mayor, so hoping for some good outcomes," Grace Waldron, another Saco voter, said.
Even those from different political backgrounds are coming together to support Jodi MacPhail.
"I am a Republican, and she's a Democrat, but she's the only one on there," Galen Gray said. "I admire her because she's taking the initiative to work hard and do the best job she can, and for that she's being rewarded."
For MacPhail, this historic moment is just the beginning of a promising journey.
"It's an honor," she said. "It proves Saco is moving forward."
