BOISE, Idaho -- Idaho Governor Butch Otter signed legislation on Monday that allows for the ticketing of drivers who impede the flow of traffic by driving in the left lane on state highways.
House Bill 471 was introduced in January and passed both the Idaho House and Senate before Gov. Otter signed it this week.
The bill amends the Idaho Code to add text that states, "no person shall operate a vehicle in the extreme left-hand lane of a controlled-access highway for a period of time that impedes the flow of other traffic traveling at a lawful rate of speed."
Drivers can still use the left lane if the right lane is blocked, or to pass other vehicles, but spending time in the lane that impedes normal traffic flow could lead to a ticket.
The bill was introduced and sponsored by Idaho Representative Lance Clow and passed unanimously in both the State House and Senate.
