WASHINGTON — Nearly 30 candy products that included a liquid white-coating have been recalled over concerns about possible salmonella contamination.
Palmer Candy Company said its liquid coating supplier notified them that an ingredient from one of their suppliers may have been contaminated.
The Iowa-based candy company voluntarily recalled 29 different varieties of treats that were distributed nationwide at Walmart, HyVee, Target and Dollar General, as well as to distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
The recalled items were sold under several brand names including Palmer,
Freshness Guaranteed, Sweet Smiles, Snackin’ With The Crew, Casey’s, Sconza Chocolates, Favorite Day Bakery, Sunny Select, Urge!, Kwik Trip Inc.
The candies were sold in a variety of packaging, such as bags, pouches and tubs. Many of the recalled products were coated pretzels or cookies.
No illnesses have been reported but production of the candy has been suspended while the FDA and the company work to determine the source of the problem, according to the recall notice.
Most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps within six hours to six days after consuming food contaminated with the bacteria. Illnesses typically last four to seven days. Vulnerable people, including children, people older than 65 and those with weakened immune systems may develop severe illnesses that require medical care or hospitalization.
Anyone who has bought white-coated confectionary items manufactured by Palmer Candy Company should return them for a full refund. You can see photos of all the recalled candy products on the FDA's website.
