WASHINGTON — Barnes & Noble is bringing back its summer reading program, meaning kids across the country can score a free book.
Each year, the bookstore chain offers an educational way to keep kids reading through the summer break. The program requires that each kid, ideally in grades 1-6, read eight books and log them in a reading journal.
Kids filling out the one-page journal, which is available for download online, are asked to provide the title and author of eight books as well as detail their favorite part and why. The reading journal form is available in both English and Spanish.
Once the reading journal is all filled out, kids can head to a local Barnes & Noble store between July 1 and August 31, 2024, to redeem their free book from a pre-selected list. The selections are divided into grades and include classics like "A Wrinkle in Time" and "Boxcar Children."
Barnes & Noble is one of many bookstores to offer summer reading programs for kids.
Camp BOOK IT! is another popular summer reading program aimed at kids aged 4 through 12. Through the program parents can track their kids' reading goals from June to August.
Each time a reading goal is met, kids earn a "Reading Award Certificate," which can be redeemed for one topping personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Rewards are emailed to the email address used to enroll in the program.
The program is all digital and is only used to track kids' reading progress, meaning it does not provide books for reading.
