3 people injured in ice cream truck crash on I-295

Police say speed and alcohol are responsible for the car and ice cream truck crash that happened on I-295 northbound near mile marker 39 in Bowdoin.

BOWDOIN, Maine — Three people were injured Monday afternoon when a car and a bus converted into an ice cream truck crashed. Spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, Steve McCausland, told us speed and alcohol are factors in the crash.

He said there were three people total in the vehicles. The crash happened on I-295 northbound near mile marker 39 in Bowdoin around 6:20 p.m. July 1.

Troopers said the car attempted to pass the bus, but it struck its rear bumper, causing the bus to lose control and overturn off of the road. The car also stopped off of the road.

Authorities said the man driving the car that hit the truck is 22-year-old Alyx Wharton of West Gardiner and charges will likely be filed against him.

The two women who were in the truck were 44-year-old Cary Bor and 42-year-old Elizabeth Seals, both from Mt Vernon.

Troopers said Wharton's speeding car struck the rear of the truck, as both vehicles were traveling north on the interstate.

McCausland said that all three people were taken to the hospital, but none of their injuries are considered life-threatening.

Traffic was reduced to one lane for a period of time as a result of the crash.
