UPDATE -- State police have identified the woman struck and killed as she walked across the highway at the Kennebunk Service Plaza Wednesday night.
Officials say 37-year-old Kelly Genito of Cairo, NY was struck and killed Wednesday evening.
Department of Maine Public Safety Spokesperson Steve McCausland said troopers believe Genito was walking and talking on her cellphone at the time of the crash.
Genito was initially struck by a vehicle driven by 59-year-old Christopher Manos of Lincoln, Maine. Officials believe Genito was struck by at least two more vehicles during the incident.
Genito's husband, 38-year-old Marco Genito, was sleeping in the cab of his truck at the time of the crash.
Police believe Kelly had crossed the highway earlier in the day.
McCaulsand said the two were traveling together while Marco delivered items to Lewiston and Medway.
Police did issue a summons to Marco for violating a protection order that had been filed against him by Kelly. McCausland said the charge was filed after consultation with the York County District Attorney's Office.
KENNEBUNK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- State police say a woman was killed crossing the six lanes of highway between the two Kennebunk rest stops Wednesday night.
Maine Public Safety Spokesperson Steve McCausland said witnesses told police the woman was on her cellphone as she crossed the lanes. He said she was struck by at least three vehicles.
McCausland said she died instantly.
