WESTBROOK (NEWS CENTER Maine)—Westbrook's Nyagoa Bayak returned to Maine today, March 10, led by a procession of police and fire to the high school gym where they had a reception for her.
The junior placed third in the high jump championship at the New Balance Indoor National in New York, earning All-American honors.
She also broke the state record in the triple jump becoming the first Maine high school girl to leap over 39 feet with her record-breaking jump of 39' 1 3/4", which ranks her 19th in the U.S.
"I got off the mat and I was like finally! I just looked at my coaches and I was happy," said Bayak. "I don't really like attention so the police escort was like 'ahhh' but it was cool so I'm happy."
