WESTBROOK, Maine — Westbrook closed a portion of its popular River Walk Wednesday from Vallee Street to Ash Street.
"We had to close [the River Walk] due to some unsafe conditions," Westbrook Mayor Michael Foley told NEWS CENTER Maine.
The decision to close part of the trail followed an inspection.
Foley said some areas along the wooden River Walk were rotted.
"Just as a precaution, we want to make sure everyone is safe and keep everyone off the River Walk until we can get those repairs completed," Foley added.
The closure comes as the city was getting ready to make repairs on the trail's boardwalk, which will be funded with grant money from the Cumberland County Community Development Block Grant Program for a portion of the project.
Foley said repairs are expected to begin this fall.
