VEAZIE, Maine — Maine State Police responded to a vehicle fire that shut down Interstate 95 in the Bangor area Monday morning.
Just after 10 a.m., troopers responded to a vehicle fire at mile marker 189 southbound in Veazie, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a release.
A 2016 Kia Sorento pulled to the right side of the roadway was reportedly found fully engulfed in flames upon police arrival.
The 82-year-old driver of the Sorento and his 81-year-old wife, both of Milford, made it safely out of the vehicle before it became fully engulfed with the assistance of passersby, Moss said.
The vehicle appeared to have been experiencing brake issues, as the driver was unable to initially come to a stop.
I-95 was closed for roughly 30 minutes while the Bangor Fire Department put out the fire, according to Moss.
