BERWICK (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Berwick Police identified the victims of Saturday's fatal car crash on Route 4 that killed four people and injured four others.
31-year-old Robert Howard, the driver of the 1994 Honda Civic that police say made an improper pass, was one of the people killed, along with 29-year-old Kevin Clark of North Berwick, and his son, 7-year-old Davin Clark.
Police said Howard lost control of the vehicle during the improper passing maneuver.
The speed limit on that stretch of road 55 miles per hour. Police did not release the speed of either vehicle at the time of the crash.
A fourth occupant of the Honda, K-La Scott, 22, of Gorham, sustained serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
46-year-old Hope Stamps, of Woburn, Ma. was driving the Ford Explorer. She sustained non-life threatening injuries, but one of her passengers, 73-year-old Barbara Allen of Wells, ME was declared dead at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in New Hampshire.
Also in Stamps' car was Hope's husband, 49-year-old Eurie Stamps, and their daughter, 17-year-old Shannon Stamps.
Sergeant Jeffrey Pilkington said that area of Route 4 has received a lot of attention in the past for the severity of crashes that happen there, but did not say it was an area prone to crashes.
"We tend to get a little to relaxed behind the wheel of the car. We need to be aware of what's happening around us," said Sgt. Pilkington. "That little bit of extra awareness could make the difference."
The crash remains under investigation by the Berwick Police Department. Anyone with information regarding the facts surrounding the crash are encouraged to contact Sergeant Jeffrey Pilkington (j.pilkington@berwickpd.org) or Detective Wilfred Vachon (w.vachon@berwickpd.org) at the Berwick Police Department at 207 698-1136.
