(NEWS CENTER Maine) — There is something about unlikely pairing and friendships that make our hearts skip a beat and restores our faith in the universe.
A 10-year-old Labrador Retriever named Fred who lives in Mountfichet Castle has made one such friendship with nine ducklings.
When the nine tiny ducklings were found waddling around the grounds of Mountfitchet Castle with their mom nowhere in sight, staff members were concerned.
Luckily the friendly yellow lab Fred who also calls the castle his home, pawed up to be a surrogate parent.
Officials at the castle say Fred immediatley tended to the baby ducks and has been babysitting them ever since.
Video shows the ducklings cuddled up around the dog and riding in a row along his back.
This is not Fred's first time as a surrogate dad; Fred also looked after an injured squirrel in the past.
